Simple tips for being directed for a voiceover from home (without a sound engineer):

1. Always record the voiceover at your end too (just in case) – it’s great for them to have a back up.
2. Always use a new file per take – say and mark each take as “Take 1, 2, 3 *fav*, alts” etc
3. Have your script in an editable format (open it in google docs / word / notability etc) ready for any amendments / notes re tonality.
4. Have dropbox / wetransfer open and ready to send takes to the client during the session (playback works well in Zoom or consider installing loopback).
5. Be prepared: read and reread the script x10.
6. Get your levels right before the session starts – -6 to -12 decibels is about right.
7. Connect using an ethernet cable – wifi isn’t as reliable.
8. Switch your phone off / airplane mode (no schoolboy errors please)
9. Take deep breaths, relax and expect the unexpected – there’s always going to be a curveball.
10. Be open to direction, it’s not criticism – they just want the best from you.
11. Have fun – it’s a great way to connect in a very solitary job!

Oh yeah and warm up your voice, warm up your body and stay hydrated!
