Microphone Technique for Great Sounding Voiceovers
For a clear, professional voiceover recording, it’s important to get your microphone technique right to avoid background noises and other distracting sounds.
1. Position the Mic Correctly
- Keep 6–12 inches away and angle the mic slightly off-axis to reduce plosives.
- Use a pop filter to diffuse air blasts.
2. Control Plosives and Sibilance
- Soften “P,” “B,” and “S” sounds by adjusting your delivery and mic angle.
3. Manage Breathing Sounds
- Breathe to the side of the mic and practise controlled exhalation.
4. Minimise Handling Noise
- Use a mic stand or shock mount to isolate the mic from vibrations.
5. Reduce Background Noise
- Record in a quiet, treated space with soundproofing materials.
- Use a high pass filter – reduces low frequency sounds
- Turn off noisy devices and use directional mics like cardioids.
6. Set Gain and Preamp Levels
- Use a quality preamp to amplify the mic signal cleanly without adding noise.
- Adjust input gain to avoid distortion or noise, and ensure consistent speaking volume.
7. Use Room Treatment
- Add acoustic foam or soft materials to minimise echoes and reflections.
8. Monitor with Headphones
- Use closed-back headphones to catch unwanted sounds in real-time.
9. Use Accessories
- Pop filters and windscreens reduce plosives and wind noise.
- Isolation shields block ambient sounds and reflections.
10. Maintain Consistency
- Keep a steady distance from the mic and limit head movements to ensure even sound levels.
Remember, your audio is only as good as the weakest link in your chain, so make sure your set up is top notch!
